Library for All is a nonprofit organization that exists to unlock knowledge to those without access to books in developing countries. Acting as the Chief Technology Officer in 2014, I directed the development of an application and supporting infrastructure to deliver e-books to people living in developing countries at a much lower cost than building physical libraries.
In partnership with local manufacturers such as Surtab and mobile network operators, we created a system that works in low bandwidth conditions, assuming that the default state of the device was to have no connection to the internet, and needed to perform as much as possible in the short periods in which it was connected. The app was developed for low-cost Android devices using Apache Cordova, Angular, CouchDB, and Ruby on Rails.
I managed a team of six developers and designers to deal with the unusual scenarios of the developing world, focusing on a clean design that could easily be translated into the local language.
